Niagara Peninsula Wine Region

Uncommon Niagara Varietals

Ontario's Niagara Peninsula wine region has gained an international reputation for producing world-class wines. More than twenty (20) VQA-sanctioned varietals** are cultivated in the Niagara wine region, mostly rieslings, vidal, chardonnays, cabernets, merlot and pinots.       ( ** only grape wines can be VQA certified )

Because Niagara is relatively new to the international wine stage, most vineyards have yet to fully mature, and plenty of experimentation with varietals is being conducted in hopes of discovering a grape (and wine) to join rieslings and icewines as Niagara signature wines.

VQA Ontario strictly defines which Ontario varietals can qualify for VQA designation, not a limiting factor when more than thirty varietals have been approved.
