Small-lot and single-vineyard wines have been one of the distinguishing practices of Niagara wineries, and recent awards in the newly created, "single-vineyard" category at the Canadian Wine Awards attest to the unique character and quality of wines that truly reflect their terroir.
Named for their unique location, soil character, terroir, lot shape, size, post style, owner, winemaker or family member, small-lot vineyards are found throughout Niagara wine country.
The winemaker's goal for the grapes from such vineyards is simple - to capture the terroir or the true elemental nature of the site and grape varietal in the wine. Our goal is but to enjoy them "while quantities last".
And while small-lot and single-vineyard wines abound, names like Delaine, Nadja, Felseck, Triangle, Bosc, Wood Post, La Petite and Funk are among the best known - and for good reason - the wonderful grapes and truly distinctive VQA wines they yield, there are just as many more awaiting overdue recognition.
